DOMESTIC BLISS: awesome tip for sorting clothes!

Posted August 6, 2008 at 2:03PM in Domestic bliss - organization and tips by dustbunny | Back

dishing the dirt, cleaning the chaos

Hey Everyone! I think I cracked the code on organizing kids extra clothing! SWEET!

I'm not an organized person so everyone can appreciate the
closet/bin/drawer cleaning system I just figured out. No joke...This is
a formula that can be adapted by everyone...check it out:

Living out of a suitcase for three weeks gave me enough time to
separate from everything piled up in my home. So, when it came time to
unpack from the trip, I was stressed because my kids had so much
clothing they didn't wear or need yet, or fit yet, etc. clogging up my
laundry room/ bedroom spaces. Well, here's what I did and instructions
f you'd like to try...

You need 1 suitcase PER kid.

You need ONE bin for "keep clothing" per size/ kid.

You need one clear trash bag for clothes to donate.

You need one more for clothes to sell.

You need one old bag (preferably one you are
trying to get rid of) to pack for a friend you know has a kid that
size. (For example, I am putting all 2ts into a mini duffle to drop at
my friends house- hopefully they'll just keep the old duffel :).

Here's what you do.

1. Wash and pile all your kids clothing. If you are like me, you have
piles everywhere so just combine them into however many piles you need
(1 per kid, I have 3).

2. Lay out one suitcase (not monster sized or it doesn't help) per kid next to the piles.

3. Choose and fold shirts and clothing you would take right now on a
trip to VISIT THE INLAWS for 2-3 weeks (that's like 1-2 shirts/pants
per day 7-10 days out and kid clothing is small so you'll still have a
lot of clothing!). If it has a hole, doesn't fit yet/well/anymore then
you toss it into wither the "save for later" bin or in the giveaway
bags.

4. Fill only one suitcase per kid and really say, would I put my kid in this at grandmas?

5. Zip shut the "keep" suitcases. Tackle the "swag" as I call it- all
the left over junk like mismatched socks, cute but not quite clothes,
etc.

6. Allow yourself to get rid of clothing that you simply don't love!

7. Allow yourself to keep one or two sentimenatl pieces. If you have
baby clothing you love, take a few pics to remember. You can fit an
entire wardrobe in two shots!

So, tell me what you think of my new idea. I'm not putting anything
(more or less) in the drawers that we did not wear at gram's last
week-I've also committed to doing this for myself.

GOOD LUCK!

Not really evil, just my step-daughter's opinion

Sounds like a good system, you have to be flexible enough to do laundry more if they have less clothes. As a bonus, all the clothes will fit in their draws.
